About iProfile:

What’s an iProfile?

It’s the dynamic career profile that is rapidly replacing the traditional CV template.

It gives you a single place online where you can record all of your achievements and experience - not just when you’re looking for a job.

It’s safe and secure - rather than post or email your CV out to many people who could then forward it on to others, you decide which employers or recruitment agencies can view your iProfile by sending them a link to your iProfile. That way you control exactly what anyone sees as they only ever see the most up to date version.

When looking for work your iProfile helps take the hassle out by providing you with a central location to manage your job hunt from. You can choose to share your iProfile with recruiters, employers and hiring managers by sending them a link.

And you can even track in detail exactly who you’ve sent it to, whether they’ve looked at it and by using our personal phone masking service, the calls you receive as a result of your iProfile. It also helps you get feedback on the jobs you’ve applied for and provides you with up to the minute career advice.

What are the benefits?

In control - you stay in control of your information and your profile: you know exactly what employers and recruitment agencies will see and know that it’s up to date. Your iProfile’s Activity Summary allows you to keep track of who’s looking at your iProfile and, by using our phone masking service, who’s calling you as a direct result of this. It also helps protect your personal details, because your information is kept in one secure place for you to choose who has access to it at anytime - rather than it being sent out, beyond your reach, to lots of different people.

Saving time - you only have to go to one place to update your profile, and you can then share it instantly with as few or as many individuals, agencies and employers as you want. Rather than re-keying the same information time and time again, you can also use your iProfile to instantly register with agencies and job boards that are iProfile compatible too.

First in line - having an iProfile gives you an immediate edge on other candidates, because iProfiles are often the only thing or the first thing that’s searched when it comes to filling a vacancy. They make recruitment much more efficient - so they’re the first port of call for thousands of employers and recruitment agencies.

Better placed - whether or not you’re actively seeking a new role, using an iProfile helps you in your career, by providing a focus to your development that you can share with others - and get feedback and advice on. With 73%* of recruiters shown to reject jobseekers who forget workplace achievements on CVs, it also provides you with a central place to store your latest skills, training and achievements so that your CV grows with you.

* Research taken from "Underselling in CVs", a 2008 report based on interviews with 1,000 jobseekers and 200 employers that contrasted what employers look for in a candidate CV with what jobseekers think they want.

Why recruiters prefer iProfile to a Word CV?

iProfiles provide a simple solution to many of the issues the recruitment industry faces and were created to replace the traditional CV. Agencies and employers have to sift through and compare CVs - often thousands every week - that all look different and include different things. To help them get through so many CVs, their IT systems are set up to automatically extract information out of them and then enter it into a searchable database. The problem is that during transfer this information can get lost and in each database it quickly becomes out of date.

Recruiters prefer the iProfile because it provides them with a standard, real-time format and a single reference point that can be shared safely between agencies, candidates and employers. This makes recruitment much more accurate, flexible and efficient - so vacancies can be filled faster and more effectively.

Do I need both an iProfile and a CV?

No you don’t. Most recruiters now prefer iProfiles but as some still use CVs we give you the option to send them both. Or if you prefer to send them just your CV, you can still benefit from using our website to keep a track of who you have sent it to and our other services such as phone masking to protect your personal phone numbers.

If you wish to attach your CV, simply click on the ’Attach CV’ tab under the ’My iProfile’ section and upload your CV.

How does an iProfile help protect me against CV ID fraud?

The average CV is shown to contain 8 pieces of information that could be used by identity fraudsters. And with identity fraud on the rise you need to be thinking about ways to protect your data. With an iProfile, you get security advantages over CV posting websites and the peace of mind that goes with knowing your identity is safe. Here are some of the safeguards built into the iProfile system:

  • You decide who you share your details with, you are in control.
  • Your iProfile is only accessible to the iProfile compatible agencies you have previously sent your CV to. You can select and can check which agencies have access and make changes to those permissions at any time.
  • Everyone who views your iProfile has to log-in first. Our software tracks those log-ins, so you know exactly who has viewed your CV and when.
  • CVs sent via word document can’t be controlled because they are distributed so easily. But with an iProfile, you simply send recruiters a link to your iProfile. You can remove access to that link at any time.
  • You have a central place to keep track of the jobs you’ve applied for and the people or companies that you have sent your CV to.
  • We don’t sell our users’ information. We don’t even look at it. Only you and the recruiters you designate will ever see your iProfile posting.
  • You can use our phone masking service to disguise your personal phone numbers. All calls received on this masked number are automatically forwarded to you and you can de-activate it at any time.

For all these reasons, an iProfile is much safer than hosting your CV on your own website, posting it to a social site, and is also much safer than sending a ’traditional CV’.

How do you make money, and is iProfile a free service?

We are not a recruitment company. We are an independent AND FREE service, with a mission to replace the CV with the more efficient iProfile. We make money through online advertising and by promoting selected partners who can deliver better value products than anywhere else on the market. It’s what we strive for. This enables us to stay independent. We never sell your data, and we take data security seriously. We also adhere to data acts, such as the UK’s Data Protection Act and Australia’s Privacy Act, to ensure your privacy is protected.

How can I access my iProfile?

You can access your iProfile from www.iprofile.org in the UK or au.iprofile.org in Australia or any website that you see the iProfile ’Use it here’ badge. Your iProfile saves you the hassle of re-keying the same information again and again by allowing you to skip the registration process. Our partners include leading recruitment agencies, job boards, industry associations and other recruitment suppliers. Simply enter your User Name (which is your email address) and Password into the iProfile log-in section of the website you are registering with.

Note: If you log-in via the central website (www.iprofile.org in the UK or au.iprofile.org in Australia) and attach a new CV you’ll automatically update all the iProfile compatible agencies you’re registered with. If however you log-in to your iProfile via an agency website and you attach a CV, you will only update that specific agency. It’s always worth going to the central iProfile website and attaching a new CV to ensure that all agencies are kept up-to-date with the most recent information.

Main concerns:

How was my iProfile created?

If you didn’t create your iProfile by either uploading your CV or building it from scratch at www.iProfile.org in the UK or au.iprofile.org in Australia, it will have been created in one of the following ways:
a) It was created by a recruitment agency for you If at some point you sent your CV to a recruitment agency that is iProfile compatible they will have converted it into an iProfile for you so that their IT systems can read it and they can more accurately match you to jobs. You can check which agency on ’My Connections’ page.

iProfiles are only ever built from an original CV, which means your iProfile won’t have been created by an agency downloading your CV from a job board’s database.

Note: Most agencies automatically extract information from CVs and enter it into a searchable database. The difference with the iProfile is that you’re given instant visibility and control over how your information is displayed to recruiters. Remember, it’s your iProfile and you can choose to block an agency from viewing it at any time.

b) It was created when you applied for a job through a job board If you applied for a position that was advertised on a job board by an agency that is iProfile compatible, they will have converted your CV into an iProfile for you so that their IT systems can read it and they can more accurately match you to jobs. You can check which agency on ’My Connections’ page.

c) You sent your CV to or registered with one of partners If you sent your CV or registered with one of our partners, they will have created an iProfile for you so that you can benefit from having an online CV in a format preferred by leading recruiters and employers as well as control over the job seeking process. You can check which company on ’My Connections’ page.

Who has access to my iProfile?

You choose who can view your iProfile and have the option to block anyone from seeing it at any time. You can track and control who has access from ’My Connections’ page. You’ll also find that whenever you send your CV to one of our iProfile compatible agencies or partners they’ll identify you as an iProfile holder and send you a request to view your iProfile. This is because the iProfile allows them to more accurately search against your information and it gives you an easy way to keep them up-to-date with your availability and job preferences.

Why complete an iProfile if I’ve already provided a CV?

Most agencies automatically extract information from CVs and enter it into a searchable database. The difference with the iProfile is that you’re given instant visibility and control over how your information is displayed to recruiters. Because data extraction is never perfect we ask you to spend just 5 minutes checking that the information held in your iProfile is accurate and up-to-date. Once complete, you can send it to anyone and re-use it to instantly register with any of our iProfile compatible agencies and partners.

How can I stop my iProfile information from being updated by other sources?

If you’ve not yet completed your iProfile to 100%, it will be automatically updated whenever you send a new CV to an iProfile compatible company using your latest CV. This is to help you keep your iProfile up-to-date so that when you do come to complete it you don’t need to spend too much time on it. To stop any updates to your iProfile by sources other than you and ensure none of the hard work you’ve already put into completing your iProfile is overridden you can lock your iProfile. This happens automatically when your iProfile is 100% complete or when you enable the Phone Masking service, which can be found in the Contact Details section of your iProfile.

Is my data secure and do you adhere to data protection, privacy acts and EU data protection law?

We take security and privacy extremely seriously. Unlike with traditional approaches, we give you control over exactly who can see your information.

We adhere to the Data Protection Act in the UK and the Privacy Act in Australia and are registered with the appropriate authorities. We also adhere to EU data protection law in that we operate in the UK and the UK Data Protection Act is compliant with the relevant EU directive.

iProfile is safer than using traditional emailed documents or paper CVs. CVs sent via word document can’t be controlled because they are distributed so easily. But with an iProfile, you simply send recruiters the online link (URL) where your CV resides. You can remove access to that link at any time.

Your iProfile is stored on our database which resides within a secure data centre in the UK and it is only accessible to the iProfile compatible agencies you have previously sent your CV to or registered with. From ’My Connections’ page you can check which agencies and companies have access and make changes to those permissions at any time. We also use a trusted 3rd party located outside the EU to ensure that your contact details have been accurately transferred from your CV to your iProfile following a job application.

Your iProfile will never be made available to employers without your express consent.

Everyone who views your iProfile has to log-in first. Our software tracks those log-ins so you know exactly who has viewed your CV and when.

Your iProfile information resides behind a secure log-in ID and password (that you determine) on a website designed with industry leading security measures.

We don’t sell our users’ information. We don’t even look at it. Only you and the recruiters you designate will ever see your iProfile posting.

How do recruitment agencies use your CV data?

If you're wondering why your CV details are stored securely on iProfile - don't worry it's all above board. You either signed up for an iProfile CV yourself, or at some stage applied for a job with a recruitment agency that uses the iProfile software. And they kindly created one for you. You should have been notified of this via an email confirmation, but sometimes emails can get caught up in over zealous spam filters.

Why would they do this?
Because it benefits you whilst improving the services a recruitment agency can provide you.

Benefits to you:
The iProfile CV has become the online CV template of choice for over nearly 3.5 million individuals and thousands of recruiters. Here's why:
  • You can instantly register with leading agencies and search against millions of jobs (currently available in UK)
  • You can track and receive feedback on job applications!
  • It is a much more safe and secure way to protect your identity
  • iProfile CV is a free service
It is a simple way to update recruitment agencies you have registered with. Once you have an iProfile, it is accessed, along with your CV by the recruitment company.
As we never sell your data, you control which recruitment agency has access to your iProfile CV by "connecting" or "blocking" access. No other service gives you this much control.

Benefits for recruitment agencies:
Thousands of recruiters have already adopted the iProfile as their preferred CV template and many more are adopting it each day.

Recruiters prefer the iProfile to the CV for the following reasons:
  • Allows them to more accurately and quickly match you to jobs
  • If you permit it, any updates made by you are instantly transmitted to them - ensuring they're searching against the most up-to-date information
  • If you are connected to an agency, it keeps them up-to-date with your availability and provides more information about your job preferences
Recruiters match you on the skills, experience and preferences you defined in your iProfile. If a recruiter shortlists you for a particular role they may contact you for follow-up discussions. For all these reasons recruiters often search against their iProfile database before even placing a job advert, which means you could get to hear about jobs first.

We never sell your data. You control which recruitment agency has access to your iProfile CV by "connecting" or "blocking" access. No other service gives you this much control.

Completing your iProfile:

How long does it take to complete an iProfile?

You can either create your iProfile from scratch or you can short-cut the completion process by uploading your CV. Either way it won’t take you very long and once complete you can re-use it to skip the registration process with other iProfile compatible job boards and agencies.

By uploading your current CV we’ll automatically extract all the information from it to populate your iProfile. Because data extraction is never perfect we ask you to spend just 5 minutes checking that the information held in your iProfile is accurate and up-to-date.

If you decide to create it from scratch, whilst it will take longer to complete our easy to use CV template will help you structure your information into a simple format.

How do I create the perfect iProfile?

Our Career Advice page provides you with lots of helpful tips on things such as writing the perfect iProfile, how to get the most out of your iProfile or how to conduct yourself at interviews. Click here to go to the Career Advice page.

What sort of achievements should I include?

73% of employers surveyed in 2008 said they’d rejected candidates for interview after finding a lacking of specific work based achievements on their CVs*. Work based achievements were defined as specific accomplishments that you could attribute to yourself, rather than generic responsibilities. For example, increases in revenue, the successful roll-out out of a software application or improvements in customer care.

The research also revealed that when it comes to writing a CV many people fail to include all their achievements simply because they’re easily forgotten. A third of people surveyed said they couldn’t recall useful achievements over 6 months old and nearly another third couldn’t recall those over 18 months old. Your iProfile provides you with a simple way to record your achievements as you go, ensuring they’re never forgotten - so make sure you update it on a regular basis.

*Research taken from "Underselling in CVs", a recent report based on interviews with 1,000 jobseekers and 200 employers that contrasted what employers look for in a candidate CV with what jobseekers think they want.

What is phone masking?

Our free phone masking service provides you with a dedicated new phone number to mask your personal mobile and home numbers. Not only does this protect your personal number, it also tracks and logs calls received in your activity summary. You can activate Phone Masking from the Contact Details section of your iProfile.

What are key skills?

From your list of selected skills, these are the skills that you use the most as well as the ones you wish to use in your next job. We recommend you select no more than 10 key skills and that you always select the associated years of experience and proficiency level for them. Recruitment consultants search against their database of iProfiles using key skills to match you with the relevant job. It’s important to invest time when selecting your key skills.

How many key skills should I enter in my iProfile?

Ideally you should enter no more than 10 key skills. Any more than this can dilute the value of your skills to recruiters.

I can’t find my skill in the dictionary?

If you can’t find a skill in the dictionary, click on the heading ’Can’t find skill’ on the skill search results page. Then add the name of the skill, a short description of it and the type of skill it is into the relevant fields. The skill will then appear on your iProfile. The details you entered will also be reviewed and the new skill/competency may be added to the Global iProfile Skills & Competencies Dictionary. In the meantime consultants who are looking for someone with this skill will still be able to find you.

What is the Employer’s Industry Sector?

This is the sector you or your prospective employer operates in. For example, if you’re an IT professional working for a bank, the sector you would select is banking.

What is the difference between Job Title and Job Role?

Job Title is the title you use in your job and the one that you would put on your CV.

The Job Role is the closest match from our list to your role. As a role can have a number of different job titles, recruitment consultants will use Job Role to quickly and accurately return candidates who match their job vacancy criteria.

What is my Current/End Pay Rate used for?

This information is not visible to recruitment consultants. The data you enter here is used to produce industry renowned pay rate analysis reports, such as the iProfile Skills Survey. We are also working on expanding to other sectors.

How can I change the layout of my iProfile?

You can change the layout of your iProfile by clicking on the ’Change Layout’ heading on the ’My iProfile’ page. This allows you to move or hide sections of your iProfile.

Using iProfile to find your next job:

How can I apply for jobs using my iProfile?

When applying for jobs with iProfile compatible agencies you simply need to use your iProfile log-in details where you see the iProfile logo. With those companies that are not yet iProfile compatible, you can either send them a link to your iProfile, which then allows you to track whether they view it from your Activity Summary, or you can download a copy of your iProfile and send them this instead.

In the UK, you can also apply for jobs and register with iProfile compatible agencies via the My Next Job page.

How can I tell whether a company is iProfile compatible?

Look out for the iProfile logo on their website.

How do recruiters search on my iProfile?

If you’ve registered with an iProfile compatible recruitment agency you could be returned as a match in their search results. Recruiters often search against their iProfile database before even placing a job advert, which means you could get to hear about jobs first.

Recruiters match you on the skills, experience and preferences you defined in your iProfile. The search engine is hierarchical, which means that if a recruiter searches on a skill that is higher or lower than the one you’ve defined in your iProfile, you will still be found. iProfiles are ranked on relevance (i.e. the iProfile with the most accurate match and those that are seriously looking for work are ranked at the top). The recruiter decides whether to shortlist you for a particular role and may contact you for follow-up discussions. Remember to ask recruiters if they found you via your iProfile.

What does it mean if a recruiter flags me in my Activity Summary?

Only recruiters you’ve given permission to view your iProfile can search against it and because iProfile compatible recruiters use our software tool to do this, we can inform you via your Activity Summary when your iProfile is flagged as a match to a job they’re recruiting for. Whilst this does not guarantee that they’ll contact you about the vacancy, it will give you some visibility over the activity your iProfile generates.

How will I be contacted about a job?

Via your iProfile you can tell recruitment consultants when and how keen you are to hear about new jobs. For example if you are "Seriously Looking" for work or "Open to Opportunities", consultants know that you want to hear about possible vacancies. Consultants can also rank their search results based on your job Seeking Status, those that are "Seriously Looking" will rank above others.

What are my Job Preferences?

These are the things you’re looking for in your next role. For example, the pay rate you are looking for or your preferred location. Your Preferences provide recruitment consultants with an insight into what you’re looking for in your next job and also help them to match you more accurately to the type of roles you’re interested in.

What is my Job Seeking Status used for?

Via your iProfile you can tell recruitment consultants from iProfile compatible agencies that you’ve registered with when and how keen you are to hear about new jobs. For example, if you’re "Seriously Looking" for work or "Open to Opportunities", consultants know that you want to hear about possible vacancies. When searching against their iProfiles, consultants can also rank their results based on Job Seeking Status, those that are "Seriously Looking" will rank higher than those that are not.

What are my preferred and current pay rates used for?

Only your preferred pay rate is visible to recruitment consultants from iProfile compatible agencies that you’ve registered with. This gives them an indication of the salary or contract rate level you’re looking for. Your current pay rate is not visible to recruitment consultants and is used to produce industry renowned pay rate analysis reports, such as the iProfile Skills Survey.

What are the EAA regulations and what are the benefits of opting-out?

These regulations are only relevant to you if you’re looking for work as a Limited Company Contractor in the UK. A Limited Company Contractor is somebody that is employed by a company and the company has signed a contract for that person to complete work.

The Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations (known as the EAA Regulations) were introduced in 2004 by the UK government to provide greater protection to vulnerable temporary workers, and ensure recruitment companies provide a quality service. All workers seeking employment via recruitment companies are, by default, covered by this legislation.

When the legislation was drafted Limited Company Contractors and their representative trade bodies lobbied because they did not want the protection provided by the EAA regulations. This is mainly because they’re not vulnerable individuals offering temporary labour but legitimate businesses providing services under contracted commercial arrangements.

In addition, it is generally thought that companies are attracted to use Limited Company Contractors because there is less risk of these people being deemed to be employees and therefore entitled to claim the same rights as permanent employees. Lastly, but significantly, relying on legislation to protect vulnerable workers would be in direct conflict with most Limited Company Contractors claims for beneficial tax treatment possible under IR35.

As a result the vast majority of Limited Company Contractors have taken up the option to opt out of the regulations.

The benefits of opting out are:
  • You will be more marketable
  • You will not risk losing IR35 status
  • Some companies will not employ Contractors unless they have opted out of the regulations
To opt-out simply mark on your Job Preferences section that you wish to opt-out of the EAA regulations. Then, before your agency can raise a contract, they will ask for written signed confirmation of your status in the form of a letter from your Limited Company and a letter from you as an individual. Preparing these in advance will prevent any delay in you being able to start a contract. Some agencies will also require confirmation that you are legally entitled to work in the UK, so have a scanned copy of your passport or other supporting documentation to hand.

To find out more about The Employment Agency Act please go to:
http://www.legislation.hmso.gov.uk/si/si2003/20033319.htm.

The DTI has also published a general advice guidance document on how the regulations will impact you at: http://www.dti.gov.uk/er/agency/conduct.pdf.
